The Dullahan (from the Irish dúlachán—“dark one”) is a manifestation of the Unseelie Court’s darker fringes. Unlike the common undead, the Dullahan is a herald of inevitable mortality. It functions as a psychopomp of the most aggressive variety, marking the transition between existence and the void.

“When the rider halts his black stallion and the air turns to the copper scent of old blood, know that the contract of the soul has reached its expiration.” — Field Notes, Archivist V.

The entity presents as a monolithic silhouette of midnight-hued armor draped over a spectral black steed.

  • The Head: Held aloft under the left arm. Its flesh is the color of moldy cheese, featuring a perpetual, serrated grin that stretches from ear to ear. Its eyes are darting, necrotic orbs capable of perceiving the “aetheric signature” of a target miles away.
  • The Whip: Constructed from the ossified spinal column of a human cadaver. It is not merely a tool of physical violence; it acts as a tether for the soul upon the moment of collection.
  • The Stallion: A construct of shadow and galloping thunder. It possesses no need for roads, as the terrain beneath its hooves effectively “flattens” into a path of least resistance.

[System Rule] When the entity enters an active state:

  1. The Call of Names: The Dullahan is known to stop its ride only when it reaches the residence of the marked. Upon halting, it utters a singular name, and that individual ceases to function biologically.
  2. Gold Sensitivity: The entity displays an extreme aversion to gold. Even a stray, infinitesimal particle of gold is sufficient to cause the entity to retreat, as the metal disrupts its connection to the faerie realm.
  3. Detection Range: A 50-meter perimeter is recommended for researchers. Entry beyond this range is effectively a death warrant.

Current archival data suggests the Dullahan has evolved to perceive electromagnetic interference as a surrogate for traditional “fated” paths. Recent sightings indicate that the entity may now be drawn to high-density server farms or quantum data hubs, perhaps searching for the “names” of those whose digital footprints have become too heavy.

Archivist Note: Any researcher encountering the Dullahan in a modern urban environment is strictly advised to carry at least one gold-plated component on their person. If the entity begins to speak your name, silence is no longer an option—total evacuation of the site is the only suggested containment procedure.
