“The wind atop Mount Takao does not blow of its own accord. It carries the malice of a trickster or the wisdom of a master. Respect the silence, or you shall be the one guided into the abyss.” — Field Notes, Archivist K.
Appearance & Manifestation
Section titled “Appearance & Manifestation”The Tengu are humanoid entities that exhibit a duality of form, typically categorized into two distinct sub-species:
- Daitengu (Greater Tengu): Humanoid features with crimson complexions and elongated, distinct noses. They possess an aura of immense authority and are frequently observed wearing the traditional vestments of Yamabushi (mountain ascetics).
- Kotengu (Lesser/Crow Tengu): Avian-like physiology, often featuring predatory beaks, wings, and claws. They serve as the tactical agents and foot soldiers of the Tengu hierarchy.
Common across all manifestations is the possession of Uchiwa (feather fans), which are believed to act as conduits for their mastery over wind currents and atmospheric manipulation.
Behavioral Logic
Section titled “Behavioral Logic”Under the current archival framework for Japanese Mythology entities, the Tengu operate according to the following behavioral protocols:
- Dimensional Tethering: Tengu are bound by the metaphysical laws of the Japanese spirit realms. They are tethered to high-altitude mountainous regions and deep-forest sanctuaries.
- Engagement Protocol: Should an entity become active, a minimum perimeter of 50 meters must be maintained.
- Dualistic Nature: They serve as master martial artists and sorcerers. Their morality is fluid; they oscillate between serving as guardians of sacred sites and malevolent tricksters who lead trespassers into dimensional “dead zones.”
Modern Anomaly Adaptation
Section titled “Modern Anomaly Adaptation”In the context of contemporary anomalous containment, the Tengu are classified as “High-Mobility Class-C” entities. While traditional containment via physical barriers has proven ineffective, Geomantic Sealing (placing Shimenawa ropes or warding talismans) has shown a 64% success rate in limiting their spatial displacement.
Researcher Notes
Section titled “Researcher Notes”There is currently a lack of formalized documentation regarding how the Tengu interact with modern urban infrastructure. Reports of “phantom sightings” in high-rise buildings suggest that these entities may be adapting to urban “peaks” (skyscrapers).
Archivist Call to Action: Researchers are encouraged to contribute incident logs regarding modern encounters where Tengu-influenced weather patterns have intersected with metropolitan zones. Ensure all data is encrypted before submission to the repository.
