“It is a shy thing, a creature of the shadows and the scent of damp pine needles. If you hear a soft, rhythmic sobbing echoing through the hemlock, you are likely within the presence of the Squonk. Do not approach—not because it is dangerous, but because it simply does not wish to be seen.” — Field Notes, Archival Division

The Squonk is a mammal-like entity often likened to a porcine organism, though its physiological structure suggests an evolution detached from standard suid biology. Its primary distinguishing feature is its skin: an ill-fitting, perpetually loose mantle covered in disfiguring warts and blemishes.

Because of this physical “deformity,” the creature lives in a state of profound, existential melancholy. It is a creature defined entirely by its own self-loathing, wandering the dense forests of northern Pennsylvania and the wider Lumberwoods.

When active, the Squonk adheres to the following behavioral patterns:

  1. Environmental Avoidance: It prefers deep hemlock forests where the canopy is thick enough to shield it from moonlight.
  2. Defensive Liquefaction: The Squonk possesses a unique, anomalous biological fail-safe. If cornered by a hunter or a curious observer, the entity will weep so profusely that it literally dissolves into a viscous pool of its own tears and slime, leaving the captor with nothing but a puddle on the forest floor.
  3. Auditory Signature: The sound of its sobbing is its most identifiable trait. Observers are cautioned to maintain a 50-meter perimeter to avoid triggering the creature’s flight response.

Current archival consensus suggests that the Squonk remains a class of entity that thrives on human perception. Unlike more predatory cryptids, the Squonk is a containment-negative entity—it effectively “contains” itself by ceasing to exist as a solid object the moment it is subjected to external observation or pressure.

Research Note: There is currently no active SCP containment protocol for the Squonk, as traditional physical holding cells are rendered obsolete by the entity’s ability to liquefy. It is suggested that monitoring stations focus on high-fidelity acoustic triangulation rather than visual capture.

Researchers are encouraged to submit documentation regarding potential interactions between the Squonk and other North American forest anomalies.
