“The cats of Ulthar know things that the humans of the waking world could never comprehend. And the cats know to whom they owe their allegiance.” — Fragment recovered from the Dreamlands Expedition, 1924

Bast presents as a shapeshifting entity of divine origin. Within the terrestrial sphere, she is most frequently observed in two distinct states:

  • The Anthropomorphic Avatar: A tall, lithe feminine figure bearing the distinct head of a feline. This form is often associated with high-ritual manifestations in the southern reaches of the Dreamlands.
  • The Feline Form: A seemingly mundane, albeit unnaturally intelligent, black cat. In this state, the entity exhibits zero trace of paranormal radiation, making detection via standard electronic sensory arrays nearly impossible.

Per the codified regulations of the Lovecraftian anomalous index, all field agents must adhere to the following directives when Bast is within a 50-meter proximity radius:

  1. Environmental Harmonization: Under no circumstances should hostility be directed toward any feline species within the containment perimeter. Bast’s retribution is instantaneous and often bypasses conventional durability metrics.
  2. The “Ulthar” Variable: Maintain a neutral, non-interfering stance. The entity functions as a cosmic arbiter for feline welfare; she does not seek human worship, only the absolute protection of her kin.
  3. Dream-State Connectivity: Field agents reporting “cat-centric” hallucinations are to be immediately rotated to sub-level containment for psychological de-briefing.

Current archival records regarding Bast in a contemporary SCP/Foundation context remain sparse. While she has not been “contained” in the traditional sense, several researchers have proposed the following:

  • Foundation Hypothesis: It is theorized that Bast acts as an informational “anchor” between our reality and the Dreamlands.
  • Anomaly Containment Proposal: Rather than physical confinement, suggest establishing “Sanctuary Zones” in high-density urban areas. Providing safe harbor for stray feline populations appears to satisfy the entity’s presence, mitigating potential reality-warping events.

Current status: Open for archival updates. There is a persistent rumor that the Egyptian pantheon and the Lovecraftian entities share a symbiotic, if not identical, root. Whether Bast is a remnant of an older, non-human civilization or a projection from the outer spheres of the Dreamlands is still being analyzed by the Xeno-Anthropology Division.

Any personnel observing anomalous feline behavior in Sector-4 should report immediately to the Department of Esoteric Containment.
