The Jorogumo (Japanese: 絡新婦, literally “prostitute spider” or “binding bride”) is a predatory entity of significant historical pedigree. Ancient texts describe it as a monstrous orb-weaver spider that has reached a supernatural age (often cited as exceeding 400 years), granting it the ability to undergo a metamorphosis into a seductive, beautiful woman.

“She approaches with the grace of a courtier, yet every movement carries the predatory calculation of an apex arachnid. Do not be deceived by the silhouette.”

  • Humanoid State: Appears as a woman of varying ages, though typically in her late twenties, possessing a striking, alluring countenance intended to lower the inhibitions of unsuspecting travelers.
  • True Form: A giant, chitinous orb-weaver spider. The transition is rarely witnessed, as most witnesses are already encased in reinforced, nearly unbreakable silk webbing.
  • Specialized Abilities: Capable of manipulating smaller spider swarms to perform complex tasks, including the projection of incendiary breath—a biological quirk often associated with ancient, fire-aligned Yokai.

Per the System Rules mandated by the Yokai Oversight Committee, the following protocols must be maintained when interacting with or tracking this entity:

  1. Environmental Compliance: All interactions must adhere to the standard physical and metaphysical laws governing the Japanese mythological cluster. Reality-bending interference should be kept to a minimum to avoid catastrophic paradox.
  2. Perimeter Security: An active containment radius of 50 meters is required. Any deviation beyond this distance by the entity must be reported to the site monitor immediately.

In the context of the contemporary containment framework, the Jorogumo represents a unique challenge to urban and rural security. While historical accounts focus on isolated mountain shacks, modern researchers have observed:

  • Digital Entrapment: Theoretical shift in hunting patterns. Rather than physical dwellings, the entity may utilize internet forums or dating applications to lure prey into “dead zones” where physical entrapment is more easily facilitated.
  • Bio-Signature Cloaking: The entity exhibits a high degree of resistance to thermal imaging, as its internal body temperature fluctuates to mimic surrounding ambient conditions.

Archivist Note: If you encounter a shack in a forest that smells faintly of burning hair and old perfume, do not engage. Retrace your steps. The “bride” does not seek a husband; she seeks a caloric supplement.
